About the European House for Culture
The Sum of Our Parts
The European House for Culture is a cultural organisation initiated by the European Festivals Association (EFA).
The mission of the European House for Culture (EHfC) is twofold: to be a House of Welcome – a meeting and working place for networks and initiatives which relate to the cultural sector. Secondly, the House aims to give the cultural sector in Europe a visible space in order to facilitate a stronger voice of the cultural sector in the European decision-making process.
Background
Many cultural networks are located in Brussels. Many cultural networks and initiatives have intrinsic interests in the EU decision-making process when it comes to the culturally-relevant territories. All those networks and initiatives have their respective, very individual profile and their specific tasks, services and missions; nonetheless many of them perform similar activities or have overlapping interests and missions.
The European House for Culture is created in order to further collaboration and enhance synergies within the Cultural sector by facilitating
- the existence of a physical working-meeting-place of the cultural sector (and others) in Brussels
- the collaboration between cultural and civil society networks and actors in Europe
- the maximisation of the operational results of synergies within the cultural sector
- the opening of a sustained dialogue with other sectors and with the European citizens
- the support and development of initiatives that improve the quality of cultural activities in Europe.
The House gives new dynamics to the cultural sector in Europe, combining mobilisation and advocacy of its associated partners with:
- The symbolic significance of a physical space in Brussels.
- Being a Welcoming Host for organisations not based in Brussels.
- Appealing to the imagination of the European decision makers.
Structure
The EHfC’s is a non-profit organisation set up under Belgian law on 10 September 2008. (Statutes FR / NL).
Its official name is European House for Culture asbl/vzw.
Its legal seat is at Place Flagey 18, 1050 Brussels, Belgium.
The EHfC has Members and works with Partners.
Members
MEMBERS of the European House for Culture are exclusively physical persons (not organisations).
The ambition is to grow in number of Members as widely as possible.
The members act as ambassadors in their capacity of
- Supporting the arts and culture
- believing in international networking
- advocating for the role of arts and culture in the integration process
The BOARD is the legal representation of the European House and decides formally on the General Assembly.
The GENERAL ASSEMBLY is constituted by all the Members and meets once a year. The first General Assembly was held in Paris on 16 November 2008.
Partners
Partners are the soul of the House and give life to it through their work.
EHfC Partners are:
- Networks which commit themselves to the EHfC Mission, the common agenda and the domains of interaction
- Networks and cultural initiatives which have their office in the EHfC
- Networks and cultural initiatives which sporadically use the EHfC as a Host, in particular when there is an activity of their organisation in Brussels
- Networks and cultural initiatives which support the EHfC and its ambition/projects and therefore use the House as a ‘postal address’
