Brussels, 01 February 2012 – The 2012 EU-China Year of Intercultural Dialogue will be officially launched today by Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Cai Wu, Minister of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. The Year will see a large number of events and projects hosted by EU Member States and China, with the aim of strengthening intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding through cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts. 23-Nov-2011: Creative Europe: Commission unveils plan to boost cultural and creative sectors

Brussels, 23 November 2011

Thousands of people working in cinema, TV, culture, music, performing arts, heritage and related areas would benefit from increased EU support under the new 'Creative Europe' programme unveiled by the European Commission today. With a proposed budget of €1.8 billion for the period 2014-2020, it would be a much-needed boost for the cultural and creative industries, which are a major source of jobs and growth in Europe. The new programme would allocate more than €900 million in support of the cinema and audiovisual sector (area covered by current MEDIA programme) and almost € 500 million for culture. The Commission is also proposing to allocate more than €210 million for a new financial guarantee facility, which would enable small operators to access up to €1 billion in bank loans, as well as around €60 million in support of policy cooperation and fostering innovative approaches to audience building and new business models. - more...

14-Sep-2011: Yoshiaki Onishi (1981, Japan) wins Gaudeamus Prize 2011

On 11 September 2011, after the closing concert of the Gaudeamus Music Week at Museum Speelklok in Utrecht, the winner of the Gaudeamus Prize 2011 was announced. From the thirteen nominees the international jury, consisting of Tadeusz Wielecki (Poland), Miguel Azguime (Portugal) and Rozalie Hirs (The Netherlands), unanimously chose for Yoshiaki Onishi (1981) from Japan. The prize was awarded by the mayor of Utrecht: Aleid Wolfsen. Andrew McIntosh (1985, USA) and Wei-Chieh Lin (1982, Taiwan) received an honorable mention for their submitted work. In total, 385 compositions from over thirty countries were submitted for the Gaudeamus Prize. - more...

The European Union has just proposed a multi-annual budget for 2014-2020. Responding to today's concerns and tomorrow's needs it focuses on priority funding at the EU level that provides true added value and includes more funds for Europe’s youth. In order to overcome the fragmentation of current instruments the Commission proposes to create an integrated programme of €15.2 billion for education, training and youth ('Education Europe'), with a clear focus on developing skills and mobility. The Istanbul Forum of the initiative “A Soul for Europe” entitled “Global Challenges – Cultural Visions” took place on 12 and 13 October 2010 in Istanbul. The jury of the International Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2011, consisting of Miguel Azguime (Portugal), Rozalie Hirs (The Netherlands), and Tadeusz Wielecki (Poland), has nominated thirteen compositions for the Gaudeamus Prize 2011. These compositions, selected from over 400 entries, will be performed in the International Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Music Week).
