History
It is no accident that it was Dubrovnik that was chosen as the venue for the newest theatrical-stage phenomenon in 1950. The city's whole history made the choice almost inevitable. With its superb architecture and magnificent history enthusiasts saw the Dubrovnik Festival as providing an opportunity to revive the tradition of Renaissance theatre while at the same time bringing new life to the wonderful atmosphere of the city.
Dubrovnik opened its doors to works of art, transcending time and space, and as a cultural centre, the city became a meeting place of prominent artists and ensembles, the place where Croatia meets the world. In this melting pot of nations, beliefs and languages the city's keys are in hands of artists. The Festival repertoire reflects the ambience and history of the city. Performances, plays, concerts and recitals are set in its architectural and natural surroundings, providing unique decors. The Festival hosts authentic open-air performances that are impossible to perform elsewhere without loosing the sense of originality.
Although cautious when inviting experimental projects, Dubrovnik remains a city of true art, proving that the temple of Thalia still has an audience ready to respond. Engagements of prestigious artists and ensembles and programs from abroad, including works of art from all over the world have given the Festival an international character.
With 3,778 performances at 50 different open-air venues, the Dubrovnik Festival has welcomed an impressive number of artists from the international music and theatre circuit. Each season, beneath the flag of Libertas, we share our dreams with our guest artists. And during the summer nights of the Festival, within the walls of this unique Croatian city, these dreams materialize as celebrations of theatrical invention and as treasured witnesses to human solidarity.
