Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada
The history of the Festival in Granada is linked to the landscape and to the main monuments of the city. Its stages are to be found all over the city and, more recently, even some in nearby villages. The programming of the Festival is traditionally based on classical music, ballet and Spanish dancing, but together with this classical repertoire it also includes attractive samples of flamenco, ancient and contemporary music, interesting exhibitions, as well as the Cursos “Manuel de Falla”, which cover higher education in music at a professional level.
This festival has been an EFA member since 1955.
Festival Programme
Each EFA member manages its own Calendar. In case there is no programme availabable for this year, please visit the festival's own website.
History
The Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, one of the most significant and attractive events in early summer in Spain, was the first Spanish member of the European Festivals Association which it joined in 1955. Privileged since 1970 with Her Majesty the Queen of Spain as its President, today’s Festival receives the support of public institutions, and a wide range of sponsors and contributors.
The origin of Granada’s Festival dates back both to the symphonic concerts performed in and since 1883 in the Palace of Charles V during the Corpus Christi Festival, and to the “Cante Jondo” (flamenco singing) Contest organised in 1922 by García Lorca, Falla and other intellectuals and artists of the period.
With the denomination as Festival since 1952, it has grown in popularity and recognition for the extraordinary settings of its concerts and performances, and for its ability to combine in its programmes the presence of great performers of our day with young artists predicted to be the maestros of the future. Images have been seen all over the world of Rubinstein, Victoria de los Ángeles or Andrés Segovia in the most beautiful Arab courtyards of the Alhambra, of Schuricht, Karajan or Celibidache conducting at the Palace of Charles V, of Margot Fonteyn or Nureyev dancing in the Gardens of the Generalife..., but the Festival can also take credit for having welcomed at the outset of their careers promising artists like Teresa Berganza, Lorin Maazel, Antonio, Joaquín Achúcarro, Monserrat Caballé or Zubin Metha among others.
Year after year the Festival is enjoyed by thousands of people in Granada and, through RNE- the Spanish National Radio-and other Euroradio broadcasting stations, by numerous music lovers all over Europe. Together with its more traditionally associated classical repertoire, the Festival also includes flamenco, ancient and contemporary music, interesting exhibitions, as well as its Cursos “Manuel de Falla” which cover higher education in music at a professional level. More than this, however, and in response to the wide range of offers and suggestions received each year, the Festival continues to grow, presenting new repertoires in unique settings to an increasingly diverse and numerous audience.
