History

The Festival Internacional Cervantino is the most important annual artistic and cultural event in Mexico and Latin-America. It has taken place uninterruptedly since 1972, year in which it was created in the city of Guanajuato, which was founded in 1546 and is today considered as Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. Guanajuato is also the capital of the State that bears the same name and is the cradle of the Independence of Mexico.

In its beginnings, the Festival concentrated mainly on artistic creations in Spanish, as homage to Miguel de Cervantes. With time, the universal dimension of Cervantes' world would emerge in the great variety of artistic and cultural expressions that were incorporated into the Festival.

During the Festival Internacional Cervanitno the entire city of Guanajuato is flooded with the best of classical, popular and folklore music, opera, theatre, dance, visual arts, cinema and literature, becoming the place of pilgrimage of thousands of people that visit from all over the country and the world. At present, there are only a few countries that have not taken part in this feast for the senses and the intellect by sending their best artists.

The Festival Internacional Cervantino, member of the European Association of Festivals, is the result of the annual effort of the Mexican Government, through the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, in a productive and close collaboration with the State and City Government of Guanajuato and the University of Guanajuato.

The places in which the events of the Festival take place are of great historic importance. In first place, the Teatro Juárez, built between 1872 and 1903. Such privileged stage is joined by the Teatro Principal, the Teatro Cervantes, the Teatro de Minas and the Auditorio del Estado. The Alhóndiga de Granaditas, an imposing fortress of the Eighteenth Century, makes a magnificent outdoor stage. Some of the concerts are held in the Churrigueresque style churches of La Valenciana and La Compañía. Another beautiful outdoor stage is the Ex-Hacienda de San Gabriel de Barrera. Visual arts exhibitions are on display at the beautiful spaces of the University of Guanajuato campus, in the Museo Regional de la Alhóndiga de Granaditas, the Museo Casa Diego Rivera, the Museo Olga Costa-José Chávez Morado, the Museo Iconográfico del Quijote and the Museo del Pueblo.

Its privileged location, the rigorous criteria for selecting the artists, the important backing of public institutions, the generous support from the private sector and the enthusiasm of the people of Guanajuato make the Festival Internacional Cervnatino, year after year, a unique rendezvous for artists and audience. Therefore, it is no coincidence that this display of cultural and artistic expressions has been named after Cervantes, the most universal of all Spanish-speaking writers.
