History

The "Festival de l'Epau" arranged on the Conseil General of la Sarthe’s initiative takes place in one of the most interesting memorial of the local architectural heritage: the Cistercian abbey of Epau.
Seated close to Le Mans downtown area, it was founded by Queen "Berengere of Navarre ", widow of King "Lion's Heart" Richard, in 1229.

Since it has been acquired by the department in 1959, the whole abbey has taken refreshment in pure XIII century, and so became one of the historical and cultural local patrimony's jewel.

High time of the abbey's cultural animation, the "Festival de l'Epau", born in 1983, takes place every year in this magnificent decoration.

The Festival welcomes many musicians of international reputation and makes place for diversity as well in the interpretation as the repertory and in the setting of the representations it offers, chamber music concerts in the monks dormitory succeeding to symphonic concerts in the abbey.

For 10 years, the principle is to invite European artists for a collaboration set in the long term, in particular with Central Europe countries, to strengthen both the artistic exchanges and the musical repertory diffusion between Western and Eastern Europe.

The program is opened to many musical styles: Opera, concertante and symphonic music, sacred music, oratorios, chamber music, recitals…

Several decentralised concerts, in Le Mans and all around the department, are also scheduled around the Festival in outstanding patrimonial places.

Today, the Festival has become one of the main events in the regional musical scenery.

The Festival belongs to "The National Federation of the International Festivals" and to The European Association of Festivals.
