History

The Chorégies d'Orange is certainly the oldest Festival in Europe. Created in 1869, it began as a venue for theatrical presentations, but one hundred years later, in 1969, the theatre aspect declined, following the success of Avignon Festival.

In 1971, the lyrical and musical side began to dominate with the creation of the New Chorégies. Indeed, for more than twenty years now, Orange has become an attraction for opera enthusiasts from across the world, just as Bayreuth, Verona or Salzburg.

The Chorégies take place in the ancient theatre at Orange, itself a testimony to Roman theatrical architecture. It is the only building of its kind, which still retains its entire acoustic wall, 37 meters high. Moreover, it can contain about 9,000 spectators. The huge size and exceptional beauty of this place allow the performance of sumptuous productions of lyrical masterpieces.

Every year, the Festival invites a selection of the most famous international singers to perform, as well as inviting young singers to participate. The quality of the casts selected for the Chorégies d'Orange programs is a major factor in the international reputation of the Chorégies, drawing wonderful audiences of thousands of lovers of lyrical music from all kinds of national and social backgrounds to this magical place to experience unrivalled moments.
