History
The Ravenna Festival has benefited since 1990 from cooperation with Roman Vlad as artistic consultant, who has based programming on themes, which examine closely the leading role of composers such as Salieri, Cherubini and Bellini in the development of music in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The program starts with a musical personality. All the connections with the music of his time are examined, from the obvious to the obscure, and then various top interpreters from the international world of music are invited to participate.
Among the guests at the Ravenna Festival in the years 1990-1992 were Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, Georges Pretre, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Michael Plasson, Maurizio Pollini, Aldo Ciccolini, Sylvano Bussotti, Daniel Chorzempa, Luana De Vol, Tiziana Fabbricini, Thomas Moser, Ann Murray, Samuel Ramey, Katia Ricciarelli, William Shimell, Carol Vaness, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Michael Hampe, Micha Van Hoecke, Luca Ronconi as well as the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, the BBC Choir, the Orfeon Donostiarra and the Ensemble Intercontemporain.
Besides specific programs, the Festival devotes particular attention to contemporary music: Pierre Boulez was a guest in 1990, 1991 and again in 1993; Luciano Berio took part in 1992; Franco Donatoni was commissioned to write a piece for the Ravenna Festival in 1991; another piece was commissioned from Giacomo Manzoni for the Festival 1993. In general audiences have been large: in 1991 18,000 visitors attended, 5% of who came from abroad.
