The Sofia Music Weeks International Festival, one of the most important music events in Bulgaria, became a strong and necessary tradition. It was opened for the first time on 24 of May 1970.
During 30 years the Festival keeps the progressive direction of its development and a performing art of the highest level to the audience. This is proved by the participants in the Festival such as: Vienna, Berlin and Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestras; opera theatres and ballet companies from Italy, France, Sweden, Great Britain, USA, etc.; conductors of world renown (Claudio Abbado, Gennady Rozdenstvensky, etc.); famous musicians and singers (Henric Shering, Leonid Kogan, Alexis Weissenberg, Janos Starker, Mirella Freni, Jose Carreras); celebrated chamber ensembles (Virtuosi di Roma, Moscow Virtuosi, Amadeus Quartet, Smetana Quartet).
The Bulgarian part is presented in a fitting manner by the Sofia Philharmonics, Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble, Svetoslav Obretenov National Philharmonic Choir, Sofia Opera, provincial choirs and orchestras from the cities of Plovdiv, Rousse, Varna, Bourgas; eminent musicians and singers (Mintcho Minchev, Rayna Kabaivanska, Gena Dimitrova, etc.)
Since 1982 the Festival is a member of the European Festivals Association for Music, Theatre and Dance, in which there are more than 65 prestigious European festivals. Since 1998 Mr. Dimitar Tapkoff, professor and composer, is a director of the festival.
