History
Every year with the first spring days the city of Ruse turns into a capital of music in Bulgaria, into a meeting point of artists from the world music stage.
March Music Days International Festival in Ruse is one of the oldest and most reputed international festivals in Bulgaria. The festival, which was founded in 1961, has turned the biggest and lovely Bulgarian city along the Danube into one of the most attractive centres for European art in Bulgaria.
Held by Ruse Municipality, under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, the festival has always been a considerable and visible part of the national culture process.
In its long historical record the festival has kept hundreds of new Bulgarian and foreign music premieres, as well as a number of works commissioned by the festival, which makes tangible and respected its contribution to the development of the contemporary culture. Up till now the history has kept strong memories of the visit of the prominent D. Shostakovich in Ruse during the 60ties of 20c.on the occasion of Katerina Izmailova’s premiere.
We shall add to this remarkable fact an impressive list of world renowned artists and orchestras, which have been presented on the festival stage in Ruse among them K.Masur, G.Rozhdestvensky, V.Neuman, Y.Temirkanov, I.Oistrakh, V.Repin, R.Barshai, S.Sondeckis, S.Costa, M.Kliegel, M.Stockhausen, F.M. Uitti, N.Marriner, Y.Bashmet, G.Kremer, M.Maisky, P.Bruns, K.Penderecki, D. Sitkovetsky, Gewandhaus Orchestra, Berlin Radio Orchestra, Bucharest Philharmonic, Bucharest Radio Orchestra, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Bruckner Orchestra - Linz, London Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, Paris Chamber Orchestra, Arnold Schoenberg Choir, Hilliard Ensemble, Sinfonia Varsovia, Kremerata Baltica, musikFabrik, Recherche, Moscow Soloists, Amadinda, Keller String Quartet, Juilliard String Quartet, Tokyo String Quartet, Ysaye String Quartet, Arditti String Quartet.
Today the festival develops as an open and dynamic form of culture, and an universal place for the application of contemporary festival practices: symphonic and chamber concerts, performances, multimedia, crossover and live electronic projects, master classes, seminars, conferences, exhibitions.
