Immediately following the UK launches of the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival" target="_blank"> Immediately following the UK launches of the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival, the Festival’s Director Jonathan Mills and its Managing Director Joanna Baker take part in a special event this Wednesday (20 March, 18:00-20:00) in Brussels, Belgium. At the event, which has been organised by the European Festivals Association, Jonathan will discuss this year’s programme which brings together artists from around the world to celebrate the relationship between artists and materials and technologies. Festival 2013 includes world-leading Belgian artist René Jacobs. Mr Mills will also reflect on the success of the Festival in the UK’s Olympic year and look forward to the opportunities and challenges of a Festival based in Scotland’s Capital in 2014 with the Referendum and the Commonwealth Games set to place the nation in the international spotlight as never before. Mr Mills will also explore the issues raised at the first Edinburgh International Culture Summit and the Festival’s role in promoting international cultural dialogue, having successfully brought together culture ministers and cultural delegations from over 30 nations around the world. The event is hosted by Flagey vzw/asb and takes place at Flagey, Place Sainte Croix, Brussels. Edinburgh International Festival 2013 brings together artists from around the world in a programme which includes the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra with Daniele Gatti and the Festival debut of Oper Frankfurt with director Barrie Kosky; a crowd sourced orchestral work being brought together by Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Tod Machover and the ground-breaking anatomical drawings of Leonardo da Vinci juxtaposed with the latest medical technology; a tribute to Frank Zappa focusing on his orchestral music, and a new commission from Laurie Anderson for Bang on a Can All-Stars; Richard Burton and Scott Shepherd playing Hamlet and mini festivals within a Festival of Samuel Beckett with Gate Theatre Dublin and Pan Pan Theatre, and dance with Scottish Ballet; an exploration of the evolution of instruments such as the clarinet with Nicola Boud, and keyboard instruments with Christophe Rousset; and an homage to Allen Ginsberg by Philip Glass and Patti Smith. Edinburgh International Festival Director Jonathan Mills said: ‘I would like to thank the European Festivals Association as well as the Flagey for giving the Edinburgh International Festival the opportunity to launch in Brussels. 'Introducing the very first Festival the Lord Provost of Edinburgh at the time, Sir John Falconer said it should be "a platform for the flowering of the human spirit". Consistent with his remarks I believe the Festival should bring together individuals, communities, and nations to share in the arts, to celebrate the very best of humanity and thus enrich all our lives. ‘It is the role of artists to think differently, to offer us provocations and inspiring contrasts to our everyday lives. Artists’ innovation in everyday materials has played a key role in the evolution of artistic techniques and thinking, and of how we experience the world. We celebrate this interaction through historical as well as contemporary work in Festival 2013. ‘I would like to take this opportunity to invite media, politicians and culture vultures from Belgium and around the world to join us in Scotland’s stunning capital this August. You will not be disappointed by the amazing work on show.’ President of the European Festivals Association Darko Brlek said: ‘The European Festivals Association is proud to count the Edinburgh International Festival as one of its most longstanding and active of its 106 members. Just as EFA, the EIF has been committed to the European integration process for more than 65 years now. ‘Since many years, Festival Director Jonathan Mills has been engaging actively in the activities set up by EFA: He acted as presenter in the [http://www.efa-aef.eu/en/activities/atelier/]Atelier for Young Festival Managers and will host the [http://www.efa-aef.eu/en/activities/atelier/edinburgh/]seventh edition of the Atelier in Edinburgh (2014).
