Quote of the Week

“A festival is a unique occasion for meeting different people and different cultures. Together with artists who are real masters of communication through art, a festival is a strong builder of bridges between different cultures - and even between civilizations."

Ján Figel’, former European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture, and Youth

EFA membership in development

The European Festivals Association was created in 1952 by 15 eminent European music festivals. In its 60 years of existence, EFA has grown into a dynamic cultural network. It currently represents more than 100 arts festivals in the field of music, dance and theatre, including different national festivals associations and cultural networks from altogether 43 countries. This composition leads to a representative, international power of expression through the EFA.

EFA in networks

A network is set up to be at the service of its members. This very purpose enhances a network's credibility and potential to act at the external level, beyond internal matters of its members. The existence of cultural networks stresses beyond questioning the urge to internationally manifest and organize oneself in order to weigh upon the European decision-making, even upon the agenda of the decision process itself. Associations, trusts with 'groups' of festivals and other networks need to be created in order to maximize the working connections, joint initiatives and common profiling to create, why not, mergers whenever needed and possible.

As a pan-European umbrella organization EFA is convinced that only through networking in the cultural sector a common European project will evolve. Our efforts have always been focused on creating tight links among EFA's members, to support each other and to foster cultural dialogue both within and outside the Association. To encourage the working together and to create synergies between different cultural networks, EFA, together with other European networks, launched – as a result of the conference “Cultural Networks at Work” (7-8 June 2007, Brussels) – the European House for Culture.

The European Festivals Association decided to join a number of colleague networks in the field of culture and art. Find below those networks.
