L'Histoire du festival

The Hellenic Festival is the oldest and most established cultural institution in Greece. It takes place since 1955 and includes various forms of art, both modern and classic, mainly music, ballet and theatre. From 1998 the Hellenic Festival has become a S.A. (instead of a state-run organization that was before) in order to achieve more flexibility and respond to contemporary challenges.

The Festival is itself the producer or hosts productions.

The events of Athens Festival take place in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a theatre built at the foot of Akropolis in A.D. 161. In its 45 – years - history, Athens Festival has been hosting names as Maria Kallas, Maurice Bezard, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karayan, Margot Fontain, Yehudi Menuhin, the Bolshoi Ballets and many others.
The Epidaurus Festival is a world-wide known festival for Classical Greek Drama. The performances are taking place from the beginning of July until the end of August every Friday and Saturday at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, a very well-preserved ancient theatre in Peloponnese (two hours from Athens), renowned for its excellent acoustics. The theatre was constructed in the 4th century B.C. with a seat capacity of 14.000. Performances of ancient drama –from Greek and foreign theatrical groups- have been presented at the theatre of Epidaurus since 1954.

Occasionally the Athens Festival uses other locations as well. For example in 1999 it used the ancient Pnyx (Pnica) for a limited number of more avant-garde performances, such as all night poetry reading with music, recitals of young Greek musicians etc. Pnyx is also an archaeological site, at the top of a hill facing the Acropolis, with a panoramic view of Athens. It was on this hill that in ancient times the Assembly of the People in Athens held its sittings.

In 1999 the Athens Festival also expanded in “Piraeus Str”. This is an industrial building (3,000 square meters) on a historical street of Athens, called Piraeus. It used to be an old factory and today it is considered a unique specimen of industrial architecture. At Piraeus Str. the Festival presented modern events, mostly for younger audiences, as well as multi-spectacles of mixed art forms, such as silent movies with live music.
