L'Histoire du festival
The International Bruckner Festival is held annually every autumn - from the middle of September to the beginning of October. The opening is an experience, which has made the city famous far and wide. The Linzer Klangwolke, a classic open-air concert that has attracted hundreds of thousands of people over the years in the beautiful surroundings of the Donaupark, has become the trademark for a wonderful festival of music.
The direct transmission from the Brucknerhaus is a fantastic musical experience drawing visitors to the city from near and far. The music - always a major symphony by a composer from Bruckner to Bernstein - is transmitted live with 120,000 watts from the Brucknersaal in the open air. The urban river landscape forms the acoustic and visual backdrop for an audience of 100,000 and the sound is converted into pictures in lasers, light, colours and fireworks. Ships on the Danube form the centrepiece of the visual event.
The festival begins with the Linzer Klangwolke and continues with top quality events. The concert series by well-known orchestras and famous conductors have proven extremely popular. Abbado, Celibidache, Janowsky, Luisi, Maazel, Sinopoli, Stein, VTgh, Welser-M÷st and many others ensure exciting, often challenging interpretations during the International Bruckner Festival, always highlighting the music of the genius, Anton Bruckner.
"A symphony in steel, glass and timber" is how the Brucknerhaus Linz was described, when the Finnish architect Heikki Siren opened it as a successful piece of urban architecture in the Donaupark in 1974. It is the principal performance venue for the International Bruckner Festival, beside the same Donaupark, which is the showplace and auditorium for the Linzer Klangwolke.
The individual concerts of the International Bruckner Festival are linked together by the Leitmotif of a well-planned program. Centred around the works of Bruckner secular, stylistic events are grouped, attuned to a particular significant theme. For three weeks in the autumn, Linz on the Danube is the leading festival address.
