L'Histoire du festival
The beginnings of the International Summer Festival in Ljubljana go back to 1952, when the Ljubljana Tourist Society organized the first Tourist Week. The first Ljubljana Festival featured a series of cultural, economic, folklore, tourist and sports events.
Through the years, the festival has outgrown the character of a local tourist event and developed into a renowned international event offering its ever-growing number of visitors in the summer months a variety of musical, theatrical and dance performances by leading domestic and international artists.
Some of the most famous personalities that have appeared on the stage of the International Summer Festival include Dubravka Tomšic, Marjana Lipovšek, Katia Ricciarelli, Grace Bumbry, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovic, José Carreras, Slide Hampton, Pierre Amoyal, Maceo Parker, not to mention the largest symphony orchestras in the world.
In the past years, the programme was enriched by the International Art Colony, which gathered artists in the inspiring environment of Križanke - one of the architectural masterpieces of the famous Slovene architect Jože Plecnik. Plecnik's architectural heritage and the numerous artistic events going on during the festival offer an ideal environment in which an artist can easily find new inspirations.
Last years also brought yet another novelty - music workshops, which gave Slovene musicians the opportunity to meet with world famous music performers and enrich their knowledge under their guidance.
The Festival's events unwind at several locations in Ljubljana but Plecnik's Križanke has remained the main scene of events. In the years from 1952 to 1956, Plecnik transformed this monastery complex into an outdoor theatre. The monastery had been owned by the medieval German Order of Knights of the Cross, which had probably settled in Ljubljana as early as in the 13th century. The house of this Order and its church were already mentioned in written sources in 1263. The monastery building was built in 1579 alongside the gothic Church of St. Mary the Helper. In the years from 1714-15, the church was replaced with a baroque building designed in the form of a Greek cross with a rich pilastered front and a strikingly colourful dome - the Križanke Church.
The redesign and renovation of the monastery complex of the Order of the Cross is the last extensive project completed by Plecnik at the age of 80. He proposed that the large courtyard be transformed into an outdoor theatre. The main idea followed by Plecnik in the renovation of the complex was to combine diverse components into a uniform creation. When the works were completed, the large courtyard appeared unsuitable for performances and was rearranged into a foyer. After Plecnik's death, the new outdoor theatre found its place in the former monastery garden.
In addition to an outdoor theatre with 1400 seats, the baroque Križanke Church with 120 seats, the Knight's Hall with 120 seats, and the Courtyard of Hell with 120 seats, concerts and theatrical performances are also organized in the foyer of Križanke, where there is space for 300 seats. The Križanke complex offers the International Summer Festival, Ljubljana and its citizens a number of exquisite scenes which many foreign and domestic guests have ranked among the loveliest in Europe.
