L'Histoire du festival
August 4, 1961. It is the date of birth of the Ohrid Summer Festival. That August day in an extraordinary acoustic church St Sophia in Ohrid the first concert was held. That evening the voice of the opera singer Ana Lipsa Tofovic of the MNT filled the church while she sang pieces by Haendl, Stradella, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg…..It was clear then that that space was the space given by God for such artistic experiences.
That was the first step however a very secure and important and hopeful one for the growth of the Ohrid Summer Festival. This step brought on its 40-th anniversary to coincide with the beginning of the third millennium.
With passing of the years the Festival grew professionally and was promising to become one of the elite European and world festivals. It started to happen in the following years when eminent performers and ensembles started to come to St Sophia and demonstrate their artistic skill. They also left impressed with the beauty of the town of St Clement.
The beauty and charm of St Sophia become a challenge for many well-known performers such as M. Rostropovich, S. Richter, A. Navarra, L. Kogan, R. Ricci, A. Chiccolini, D. Oistrach, G. Cremer, H. Szeryng, R. Shankar, V. Tretjakov, V. Rjepin, El. Obrascova, K. Ricciarelli, Victoria de Los Angeles, M. Tipo and many other instrumental and vocal soloists among which the local ones such as G. Bozikov, B. Nikolovski, M. Eftimova. Bl. Dimcevski, D. Taseska, S. Slejanska and ensembles as Virtuosi di Roma, The Vienna Symphony, Hungarian virtuosi, St Petersburg soloists, Zagreb soloists, George Enescy Chamber Orchestra, Borodin Quartet, the Zurich Trio, Bartock Quartet, Moscow Trio, Macedonian Philharmonic, the Opera and the Ballet at the MNT and many others.
Alongside with the musical part of the Festival the drama took more and more important part at the event. This was even more so because Ohrid has wonderful locations and sites. Such locations are the Anterior of St Sophia, the Samuil Fortress, St. Panteleimon, Dolni Saraj, Saraiste and many others offer numerous opportunities for drama performances outdoors which itself is a special attraction for drama fans. Shakespeare, Sophocle, Euripid, Aristophan, Brecht, Molliere and many other foreign and domestic authors whose pieces are being presented either as premiere or adaptations of foreign or domestic visiting ensembles, represent a genuine festival enjoyment for the numerous visitors and tourists.
Finally, the high artistic value of the Festival is confirmed by becoming a member of the European Festival Association in 1994. At the moment the Festival is highly appraised European Festival with a determined future for its artistic conception and tendency for a new vision for the next millennium.
