L'Histoire du festival
To make classical music something that everybody can experience – the fundamental principle behind the Schleswig- Holstein Musik Festival, called into life in 1986, has been a hit with the performers, the public and all ist participants right from the word go.
Former Federal President of Germany, Richard von Weizsäcker, called it a "tremendous citizen’s action for music", for Yehudin Menuhin it is the "most human and likable of all festivals" and artistic co-founder, Leonard Bernstein summed it up as "music as its best".
But it is not only the music which makes the festival so incomparable. It is also the unique mixture of a wonderful landscape, romantic architecture and top quality music which all go to make up this unique synthesis of the arts.
For musicians from all over the world, the festival is a very special experience which enables them to perform in original settings before an audience who simply loves good music.
The magnificent county estates, huge barns and stables, beautiful churches, manor houses and castles of Schleswig-Holstein from a atmospheric backdrop for musical offerings which would otherwise be reserved for the patrons of more famous concert halls and opera houses.
In this unconventional way, the Schleswig- Holstein Musik Festival creates ideal conditions for people from all age groups, both from Germany and far away, to enjoy classical music.
Everybody who is somebody in the world of classical music, looks forward each year to a magical musical summer in the north of Germany – encounters with famous colleagues, the stars of tomorrow and, of course, an auditorium within which, in this unique form, classical music is not only heard, but felt.
Creative business people with a sense of responsibility have accompanied and supported the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival since ist inception, and paid a major contribution to ist success.
