L'Histoire du festival
General Director: Elzbieta Penderecka
Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival, a member of European Festival Association (EFA), is Poland’s largest festival of classical music. It is always held in and around the Passion Week, and is thematically linked to the reflexive and dignified mood of the period.
For the first 7 years, the Festival was held in Kraków, and in 2004 found a broader development opportunity in Poland’s capital, taking some of its concerts also to other cities of Poland, and entering Poland’s culturescape as one of the most artistically significant and prestigious events.
The goal behind the Festival is to dissemination of high culture in Poland and inspiring a positive image of Poland – a country that is as artistically active as attractive.
The Festival attracts world-class virtuosos, choirs, and orchestras presenting at the same time Poland’s most outstanding artists and ensembles. During its over 10 years of history it has become the meeting place for eminent musicians from all the continents. For many music lovers, the Festival’s extraordinary affordability, is frequently the only opportunity to listen to concerts of most upmarket artists, coming to Poland for the first time especially for the Festival.
Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival together with the International Musicological Symposium, master classes and the Exhibitions of Manuscripts held in the Jagiellonian Library form a content unity, and as such is the only event in its type in the world. The exhibition has accompanied the Festival since its first years, and presents the priceless autograph of great composers: J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann, and Szymanowski, made accessible to the public only for the duration of the Festival.
The sophisticated programme covers and posters designed by Ryszard Horowitz, Rafal Olbinski, Stasys Eidregevicius, Wojciech Siudmak or Andy Warhol have become a particular trademark of the Festival.
In an effort to fulfill not only its cultural but also educational mission, the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival has initiated Master Classes. In 2007, the Master Class was be led by famous singer Ileana Cotrubas. In 2008, Teresa Berganza and Christa Ludwig will be led the Master Classes during the festival.
