Music Isle Festival in Jeju

Artistic Director, Nanse Gum

A forceful and dynamic conductor whose love and understanding for music has made him one of the most respected in his field. After graduating from Seoul National University, he studied under professor Hans-Martin Rabenstein at the Hochschule der Kunste Berlin, and under Pierre Dervaux in Nice and Paris.

In 1977, GUM was chosen as one of the finalists in the ‘Herbert von Karajan Young Conductor's Competition and was given an opportunity to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic and other major orchestras in Europe. Since returning home in 1980, he was appointed Conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra and has enriched the repertoire by developing music programs for the orchestra and featured a number of talented soloists, domestic and foreign. From 1992 to 1999, Nanse served as Music Director of the Suwon Symphony Orchestra..

Since 1998, GUM has been primarily engaged in the activities of EURO-ASIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA(EAPO) founded by himself. Under his dynamic leadership, the Orchestra has rapidly gained prominence in the national music scene through innovative educational programs that appeal to music lovers of all ages. The EAPO had a series of successful concerts tour in Paris, Varazdin, Opatija(Croatia), Ljubljana in 2006.

Gum has been showing splendid activities during past few years as a festival director with strong vision and unique idea about the importance of music for all people. The Jeju Music Isle Festival and the Muju Academy and Festival, 2 big events from his creative idea, successfully testified how he could inspire people and make audience happy with the magic of music. In November 2008, he founded the World Symphony Orchestra with 90 musicians from 22 countries all over the World, which showed through the concert tour in the 5 big cities in Korea how music can make people become friends. For the recent years, he had continuously devoted himself to teach the gifted young musicians through creative and energetic orchestral training, which reached to the monumental success of the KUCO(Korea United College Orchestra) concert at Seoul Art Center in January 2011.

He had been in charge of the Artistic Director of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra from 2006 to September 2010, and is currently the artistic director of Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra..
