Jorge Andrade has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre, branch actors and directors. He has a theatre acting course taught by the Third Angel (Creative and Artistic Creation Program, Gulbenkian, 2004) and training under the Mugatxoan project (Serralves Foundation / Arteleku). In 2003 he founded mala voadora with José Capela, with whom he shares the artistic direction of the company. In addition to being an actor, he has directed the company's performances since 2004 and more recently has also written the texts.
Has worked with Teatro da Garagem (1993-2001), Artistas Unidos, Comuna, Collectif Jambe; and with Jorge Listopad, Artur Ramos, Rogério de Carvalho, Álvaro Correia, Miguel Loureiro, Tónan Quito, amongst others. On television he has worked on Zapping and the series Os Boys. He was invited to: direct a piece for the 50th Anniversary of the Gulbenkian Foundation celebration; take part in Tryangle - Performing Arts Research Laboratories in Marseille, direct Companhia Maior in collaboration with Tim Etchells; be part of Forced Entertainment’s performance Quizoola! Lisbon.
He has taught at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, at Escola Superior de Dança and at the Theatre Bachelor at Universidade do Minho, furthermore he has led workshops in Sheffield (International Student Drama Festival), Beirut, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Sarajevo and Maputo.
His first creation – Os Justos – was awarded the Honourable Mention of the Maria Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão Prize by the Gulbenkian Foundation. The piece Moçambique was awarded the Prémio Autores (SPA/RTP), an Honourable mention by the Associação Portuguesa dos Críticos de Teatro and nominated for the Globo de Ouro. He was also nominated for the Prémio Autores for directing Overdrama. The piece what I heard about the world, co-criated with Third Angel, was nominated by the Total Theatre Awards for best performance at the Edimburgh Fringe Festival.
