Workshop - streaming of live performances

The European Festivals Association (EFA) and Pearle*-Live Performance Europe have teamed up to improve knowledge on legal and managerial aspects on cross-border cooperation. Over the past two years a wide range of topics were covered including social secu

This time, our workshop in the context of the RISE-project will focus on the streaming of performances.

In the digital age, all festivals and live performance organisations have to deal with the online environment, be it in the context of their own website, (live) streaming, social media or archive material.

In the first part, we will present a short analysis of a mini-survey on live streaming which was carried out amongst Pearle members in the last 6 months. It will give a first overview of challenges and opportunities of streaming in the performing arts sector.

We will then give the floor to our four experts to hear more about legal issues related to streaming, contractual solutions and collective agreements, new business models and technological challenges. Two practical cases – from the pop and the classic sector – will provide an insight how successful streaming services can be set up.

In the second part of the workshop members and participants will split in smaller groups to follow one of the “facilitated conversations” which will each be chaired by our four experts and touch on specific issues related to streaming:

  • How to deal with copyright legislation when streaming? Examples of collaboration with collecting societies and publishers.
  • What do I have to put in contracts with artists to allow (live) streaming? Is a collective agreement of help?
  • What business model to ensure a sound financial basis for the streaming portal? How can we get prepared to new business models? How to connect best to your audiences.
  • Which new technologies and tools will influence live streaming in the coming years? How to ensure the investment for streaming?
  • Our experts will give a practical advice and tips based on their experience in and with streaming activities in the live performance sector.

Speakers are:

  • Dirk De Clippeleir, AB Brussels
  • Christophe Widauer, Wiener Staatsoper
  • Rolf Bolwin, DBV German theatre and orchestra Association
  • Peter Marx,  MVVP law firm
