International Music Festival "Janáček May" celebrated its 40th jubilee in 2015 and remains the top event of classical music life for local citizens and visitors from abroad. Taking place in spring, the festival brings high-level performances and concerts of distinguished artist from the Czech Republic and all over the world not just to the city of Ostrava, but also to various venues in other towns in Moravian-Silesian region. The region has been influenced by the metal and coal mining industry, but has also always been a cultural and creative centre, where excellent composers such as Hindemith, Prokofiev or Beethoven spent part of their lives and created their works of art. With this historical background Janáček May brings its concerts not just to classical concert venues but also to unique historical and industrial buildings. Janáček May aims to be one of the reasons why a whole region should not deny its past, but on the contrary, be proud of it.
