The Italian/Brasilian composer José Henrique Padovani has won the ECPNM European Competition for Live Electronic Music Projects 2011 with his composition “Aviagem e o rio”. The competition was open to works for orchestra and live-electronics. Out of a number of entries the jury, consisting of Helmut Erdmann, Miguel Azguime, René Gulikers and Henk Heuvelmans, selected two works for performance: Padovani’s work and “En plein air” by Giorgio Klauer (Italy). These two composers were invited by ECPNM to study the works with the performers: the Symphonieorchester der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg conducted by René Gulikers. The performance took place at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg on 19 November, next to new works for orchestra and live electronics by Constantin Basica and Sofia Borges. The winning work will be promoted by ECPNM amongst its members and to other organisations in Europe for further performances. The 2012 edition of the ECPNM European Competition for Live Electronic Music Projects features double bass and e-bass guitar. José Henrique Padovani (São Paulo, 1981) studied composition with Rogério Vasconcelos (2002-2004), Sérgio Freire (2005-2006) and Silvio Ferraz (since 2007). He received his Master of Music (2009) from the Institute of Arts of the State University of Campinas, where he is a Doctor of Music candidate since 2009. He has attended to workshops and master classes with composers and musicians such as Edgar Alandia, Emmanuel Nunes, João Pedro Oliveira, Claude Ledoux, Flo Menezes, Rodolfo Caesar and the Arditti Quartet. Having a strong interest in the interactions between music creation and new technological resources, he is highly proficient with programming languages and environments dedicated to creative music composition (PWGL, OpenMusic, Max/MSP, Pure Data, SuperCollider) and also with tools with a broader application in the field of the interactive arts (Processing, Arduino, openFrameworks). His works have been played by ensembles such as the Camerata Aberta (São Paulo, Brazil) and the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra (Minas Gerais, Brazil). In 2010 he has received the 1st Prize Camargo Guarnieri for his piece impedance, for flute and ensemble.
