MusMA represented at EMC meeting in Istanbul

24 April 2012

From 19 to 21 April 2012, in Istanbul, at Borusan Music House, the European Music Council (EMC) organised its 2012 European Forum on Music. During the meeting, MusMA – Music Masters on Air, a collaboration project originating in meetings of the European Festivals Association (EFA), was presented by Prof. Dr. Ömer Bozkurt, trustee of the SCA Music Foundation of Ankara and coordinator of the MusMA Project for Turkey. On 21 May, Mr Bozkurt presented the project MusMA – Music Masters on Air to Forum participants which has been running for three years: “The MusMA project fits particularly in the general theme of EMF ‘Transcending Boundaries - Building Bridges’. MusMA is the abbreviation of Music Masters on Air, also labelled European Broadcasting Festival. It began in 2009, in the context of EFA following the initiative of Mr. Jan Briers, the manager of the Flanders Festival.” Mr. Bozkurt outlined the nature of MusMA: “It consists mainly of a joint effort of European festivals (currently eight EFA Members) to promote young artists, composers and players. The principle is very simple: Festivals in a common agreement decide a specific theme for each year and a form for the music to be composed (piano solo, percussions, voices). Then the festivals commission new works to young composers referring to this theme. Composers and the players come together in a workshop to exchange their vision, and experiences, and to listen to their respective works. The first performances of their works are realised in those workshops (Granada 2011, Ljubljana 2012, Wroclaw 2013). Then, every participating festival includes at least five works among the “harvest” of the year to its next festival programme. These performances are recorded by partner radio stations and submitted to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for a larger broadcasting.” Following the presentation, the MusMA presentation film by Thomas Hendrick, filmed during the 2011 MusMA workshop in Granada was shown. Some participants expressed their interest for the project; MusMA coordinator Jan Briers from the Flanders Festival is ready to reply to any questions. The European Forum on Music was inaugurated in the presence of Ms. Irina Bokova, General Director of UNESCO, with a concert by Borusan Quartet which interpreted the 1rst Quartet for Strings of A. Adnan Saygun (1907-1991). Among some musical events that the participants enjoyed during the EMC meeting one is particularly worth mentioning: The concert of two pianos and percussions at Süreyya Theater on 20 April. The programme was composed of works of two contemporary Turkish an one Polish composers: I. Usmanbas (Three Movement for two Pianos - 1957), H. Uçarsu (Düstanbul - 2011) and K. Serocki (Fantasmagoria - 1972) plus the “Sonata for two pianos and percussions” of B. Bartok were performed by Mr. Metin Ülkü, Mr. Can Okan (pianos), Mr. Stanislaw Skoczysnki, Ms. Amy Salsgiver (percussions).
