21 April 2021

Announcing two new editions of the EFA-PEARLE* Ultimate Guide for Cultural Managers

Pearle* and the European Festivals Association (EFA) present the updated versions of the Ultimate Guide for Cultural Managers – Social Security in an International Context and Copyright Clearing for Live Events in an International Context

Joint Press Release

The 7th and 8th editions of the EFA RISE / EFA RISE 2 series What you didn’t know about Europe - The Ultimate Cookbook for Cultural Managers is out now with two updates:  Social Security and Copyright legislation.

Although mobility is on hold and Live Performance is coping with the challenges of reopening its physical doors to its artists and audiences, the sector will tour again, have residencies and co-productions as cross-border working is deeply rooted in the DNA of the live performance sector.

In a vibrant and highly mobile sector that is not defined by borders some practical matters, related to working in different countries, need to be taken care of.

In the Social Security in an International Context booklet we will help you to understand the consequences on social security in an international context and explain what you must do to comply with the European rules. It will give you information on the overarching principles, conditions of posting for employees and self-employed, documents needed when touring/working in different countries as well as a simple guide to assess where for each case you should pay your contributions.

The Copyright Clearing for Live Events in an International Context booklet deals with frequently asked questions such as: who is responsible for the rights clearance? Which entities, collecting societies or publishers need to be contacted and how can a good deal be negotiated with them? And as if this was not complicated enough, other questions arise regarding whether or not to take into account national copyright rules or harmonised European legislation. This guide will walk you through the basics of copyright legislation and explain the main principles. It gives an overview of the stakeholders involved in the copyright chain and provides both practical insights and tips on how to handle the clearance process and contract negotiations.

These new editions follow the successful synergy partnership between EFA and Pearle* - Live Performance Europe started in 2014, in the context of EFA RISE, to improve general knowledge of the legal and managerial aspects of cross-border cultural cooperation and counts with similar publications on Social Security, Artist Taxation, VAT, Copyright Clearing for Live Events and Visas for Third Country National Artists Travelling to the Schengen Area. In the frame of EFA RISE 2 updates were produced to account for the changes in legislation.

The booklet is available to download in the Pearle* Resource Center and in the EFA Publications.

This publication is part of the EFA RISE 2 project implemented with the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
