New EU Culture Programme established

On 12 December 2006, the European Union decided on the new Culture Programme, a Community programme established for seven years (2007-2013) The programme shall be implemented over a period starting on 1 January 2007 and ending on 31 December 2013. The general objective of the programme shall be to enhance the cultural area common to Europeans through the development of cultural cooperation between the creators, cultural players and cultural institutions of the countries taking part in the programme, with a view to encouraging the emergence of European citizenship. The Programme shall be open to the participation of non-audiovisual cultural industries, in particular small cultural enterprises, where such industries are acting in a non-profit-making cultural capacity. The specific objectives of the programme are: to promote the transnational mobility of people working in the cultural sector; to encourage the transnational circulation of works and cultural and artistic products; to encourage intercultural dialogue. The Culture Programme is established by the Decision No1855/2006/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, published in the Official Journal n° L 372 of 27 December 2006.
