Danish percussionist Reumert wins the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition 2007

The International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition, open to musicians up to 35 years of age, took place in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) from 15 to 22 April 2007. The jury of the 36th edition of this competition for the performance of contemporary music consisted of Magnus Andersson (guitar), Stephen Drury (piano), Rohan de Saram (violoncello), Benny Sluchin (trombone) en Harrie Starreveld (flute). In the First Round there were 59 participants, in the Second Round 17 were left. There were 5 finalists. First Prize (4500 Euro): Mathias Reumert (Denmark) - percussion Second Prize (2250 Euro): Duo Disecheis (Italy): David Brutti – saxophone, Filippo Farinelli - piano Third Prize (1125 Euro): Niko Kumpuvaara (Finland) - accordion The other finalists were the French recorder player Julien Feltrin who came to a shared fourth position with the German saxophone quartet Clair-obscure. There was a special prize, the Jurres Prize, of 2500 Euro for the best performance of a Dutch work. This prize is offered by Donemus, publisher of Dutch Contemporary Music. The jury awarded the Jurres Prize to Clair-obscur for their performance of Saxofoonkwartet, composed in 1970 by Tristan Keuris. The next edition of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition will take place in 2009. Mathias Reumert (b. 1980) is a Danish percussionist, performer, composer, and producer. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and in 2005 completed the Master of Arts degree from University of California, San Diego, where he studied with prof. Steven Schick. Mathias has given recitals in the USA, Mexico, France, Korea and Scandinavia, and has won first prizes in several soloist competitions, including the Concours International de Vibraphone 2002, France, and at the Percussive Arts Society Int. Convention 2004, Tennessee, USA. He lives in Copenhagen, and plays ‘electronica’, classical music, avant-garde, and jazzy stuff with equal enthusiasm, e.g. as member of the PACE Percussion Trio.
