17 July 2001

Jerusalem - July 11, 2001 - Jazz great, drummer Max Roach recently performed with alto saxophonist Arnie Lawrence at the Jerusalem Theater before a sell out crowd of enthusiastic fans. The performance was followed by a spontaneous "jam session" held in the lobby for hundreds of fans that couldn't buy tickets and turned up, hoping to catch a glimpse of jazz superstar, Max Roach. Max Roach exploded on the jazz scene in the 1940s and performed with top jazzmen such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Coleman Hawkins, among others. Mr. Roach was invited to perform at the Israel Festival as the Artist in Residence for the International Center for Creative Music, Jerusalem founded by Arnie Lawrence, who has performed with Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Clark Terry, among others. During his visit, Max Roach traveled throughout Israel with Arnie Lawrence, meeting and jamming with many leading Israeli jazz and ethnic musicians that joined him on stage at the Israel Festival performance. The I.C. Creative Music, Jerusalem is planning to release a documentary of Max Roach's visit and his encounters with Israeli musicians of diverse faiths including Jewish, Moslem and Christian performers. Max Roach also gave a Master Class at the Jerusalem Theater arranged by Arnie Lawrence. He shared with the students his experiences learning to play jazz drums in New York in as teenager, encouraged them to learn piano and sang a humorous blues song that broke up the theater. He also received a Blues for Peace t-shirt from Shmuel Meir at the Master Class. Blues for Peace was set up in Israel to honor the roots of blues, promote peace and the understanding that ALL peoples have had their share of the blues.
