Polish pianist wins the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition 2009

The International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition, organised by Music Center the Netherlands and open to musicians up to 35 years of age, took place in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) from 20 to 26 April 2009. The jury of the 37th edition of this competition for the performance of contemporary music consisted of Lucas Vis (chairman), Wiek Hijmans, Luc Houtkamp, Stefano Scodanibbio, and Steffen Schleiermacher. In the First Round there were 62 participants, in the Second Round 16 were left. There were 5 finalists. • First Prize (4,500 Euro): Małgorzata Walentynowicz (Poland) - piano • Second Prize (2,250 Euro): Ear Massage percussion quartet (Netherlands) • Third Prize (1,125 Euro): The Outer Banks Duo (United States) with Stacy Wilson - saxophone and David Hughes (piano) The other finalists were the sonic.art saxophone quartet from Germany and the Italian flutist Matteo Cesari, who came to the fourth and fifth position respectively. The Special Prize of 2,250 Euro for electric guitar was not awarded, but will be kept in stock for the next edition of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition, which will take place in 2011. There is a planned Special Prize for organ in 2011 as well.
