The first edition of the European Week of Festivals (30 July - 5 August 2009), which was a pilot event, was joined by members of the European Festivals Association (EFA) from: Macedonia, Portugal, France and, in Italy: Emilia Romagna Festival, Festival della Valle d’Itria, Festival Puccini, Paestum Festival and Stresa Festival. The theme was creativity and technological innovation on the occasion of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009. A seminar on creativity, which was part of the FestLab Project, took place in Rome on 17 September 2009 and was organised in partnership with the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS). Kathrin Deventer, Secretary General of EFA, and other keynote speakers took part. Following the discussion, Italiafestival would like to put at the core of the second edition of the European Week of Festivals: The value of diversity: Diversity as richness in performing arts, arts, culture and society, in the name of welcoming. The principle of tolerance is one of the key themes of the liberal thought which arises and spreads all over Europe. A concluding seminar on the theme of diversity and access to culture will be organised in September 2010 in Rome.
