LUCERNE FESTIVAL: "Pierre Boulez Academy" starting in 2004

17 April 2002

Music for the Future: the Pierre Boulez Academy A project by LUCERNE FESTIVAL and the Lucerne Music Academy starting in 2004 Pierre Boulez, this year's composer-in-residence, will become the artistic and conceptual director of a new academy for contemporary music, which LUCERNE FESTIVAL and the Lucerne Academy of Music will hold every year in summer, starting in 2004, during the Festival period. The Pierre Boulez Academy is a new, future-oriented training academy, where young and highly talented musicians will be taught the art of interpreting the music of our times. This highly innovative programme of LUCERNE FESTIVAL, the most significant concert festival of Europe, offers a unique platform for the new academy. With Pierre Boulez and the music lecturers of the Ensembles Intercontemporain, the very best and most experienced of teachers of the contemporary repertoire will teach in Lucerne. The Pierre Boulez Academy addresses young musicians dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries who wish to get some practical experience in this field. They are selected internationally on the basis of auditions. In preparation of this event, an international network of music institutions, musicians, and lecturers will be created in the next few months. Pierre Boulez and the musicians of the Ensemble Intercontemporain will teach students a solo, chamber-music, and ensemble repertoire. Lessons will focus on the elaboration of selected symphonic works of the 20th and 21st centuries with an Academy orchestra. For the Academy orchestra, annual commissions will be awarded to young and promising composers. The creative process is to cover a period of two years, during which the composers will be given an opportunity to write their own work, and rehearse and refine it with the orchestra. The Academy will mainly focus on the creative process of contemporary music. Various Academy concerts with chamber music and symphonic programmes are planned within the scope of the Festival. The Pierre Boulez Academy strives to include the public in this process, who will be able to attend open rehearsals and workshops and thus pursue the work of the Academy and intensively familiarize themselves with the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Pierre Boulez Academy will succeed the traditional master-classes of LUCERNE FESTIVAL and the Lucerne Academy of Music. The master-classes will be held for the 60th time in the summer of 2003 and will already then be re-oriented to include new contents in view of the future Academy. Pierre Boulez will once again hold a conducting class and the Ensemble Intercontemporain will elaborate three programmes with music of the 20th and 21st centuries with a small number of students.
