Javier Solana to receive Charles V European Award of the European Academy of Yuste Foundation

Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia will present the Charles V European Award to Javier Solana, President of Madariaga - College of Europe Foundation, on 11 February 2011 at the Royal Monastery of Yuste, Spain. The 2010 ‘Charles V European Award’ was awarded to Javier Solana for his high level of commitment to external relations and his efforts in favor of peace and democracy as High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union. The European Charles V Award Ceremony is organised by the European Academy of Yuste Foundation. • When? 11 February 2011 at 11.30 hours • The ceremony will be attended by high representatives from the political, social, economic and cultural field • The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso, will take part in the event. • The Laudatio to Mr. Javier Solana will be given by former President of Poland, Mr. Aleksander Kwasniewski. • This is the 8th Edition of the European Charles V Award • The Prize has been awarded in previous occasions to Jacques Delors, Wilfried Martens, Felipe González, Jorge Branco Sampaio, Mijail Gorbachov, Helmuth Khol and Simone Veil • The day before to the ceremony, Thursday 10th February in the afternoon, Mr. Javier Solana will meet the Media and Press representatives who would like to cover the ceremony The day before to the ceremony, Thursday 10th February, Mr. Javier Solana will meet the Media and the Press representatives that will come to Yuste to cover the ceremony. At the ceremony, which will be held on February 11th at 11:30 hrs, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain will present this award to Javier Solana at the Basilica of the Monastery of Yuste, headquarters of the European Academy of Yuste Foundation. Important personalities in all spheres of European society will also attend the ceremony, including the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso, to accompany the awardee on this solemn occasion. The laudatio will be given by Aleksander Kwasniewski, President of the Republic of Poland for ten years (from 1995 to 2005). The European Academy of Yuste Foundation grants this award to recognize the work of relevant public figures who, through their efforts and dedication, have contributed to the enhancement of European values and the construction of Europe. Since 1995, when the ‘Charles V European Award’ was granted for the first time (to Jacques Delors), the Spanish Royal Family has shown their support for the European Academy of Yuste Foundation, presiding over all the award ceremonies held to date. The jury that awarded the ‘Charles V European Award’ to Javier Solana was chaired by Guillermo Fernández Vara, President of the Regional Government of Extremadura and of the European Academy of Yuste Foundation and was composed of prominent personalities such as: Martti Ahtisaari, Felipe González Márquez, Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio, Jacques Delors, Simone Veil, Wilfried Martens, Paul Preston, Marcelino Oreja Aguirre and Hans-Gert Pöttering. This will be the eight edition of the ‘Charles V European Award’, granted on previous occasions to Simone Veil (2008), Helmut Kohl (2006), Jorge Sampaio (2004), Mikhail Gorbachev (2002), Felipe González (2000), Wilfried Martens (1998) and Jacques Delors (1995). In line with the ‘Charles V European Award', the European Academy of Yuste Foundation announces the call for candidates for the PhD research and mobility scholarships named after the award winner, which relate to the milestones in European history and integration process.
