The Bacchae, directed by Sándor Zsótér

26 June 2002

THE BACCHAE by Euripides Directed by Sándor Zsótér A co-production of three theatre-members of the Union of European Theatres, with the help of the European Commission. Zsótér, who bases his art on scenic imagery, has explored all the repertoire, from Shakespeare to Sarah Kane, in 40 different productions. The Bacchae is his attempt to portray, through mythology, man’s interior conflicts; how can one define man’s chances to defete Dionysis; how can one play, “live”, the dramatic story of Greek tragedy. Already, in the first stage of casting the parts, he breaks the traditional theatrical conventions. He raises barriers in order to make the actors find, in themselves, the essential responses. He takes theatre so seriously, that he is able to create in a completely free and inventive way. He is the most innovating and controversial artist of the Hungarian stage. The co-productors are : the Katona Szinház of Budapest, the National Theatre of Northern Greece of Saloniki, and the National Finnish Theatre of Helsinki. The show is for a rather small auditorium, 200-300 seats and is performed by four actors and two actresses (Hungarian, Greek and Finnish) who each speak in their languages. The price of one performance is 18.000 € including fees, p. d., flights, set and costumes transportation, and royalties. (Three days necessary : build-up, rehearsals, performance). Price for two performances : 20.000 € For three : 25.000 € For four : 30.000 € For five : 35.000 € For six : 45.000 € The host festival or theatre will also take in charge hotel rooms (b&b) for 13 people, and local transportation (airport – venue).
